CONSULTANT ONCOLOGIST (Upper GI and Breast)
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time permanent Clinical Oncologist specialising in Upper GI and Breast cancers at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust. We are looking for a Clinical Oncologist who will excel our service further, joining a supportive team of 13 dedicated Consultants.
We are the major cancer service provider within Staffordshire, supporting Mid-Cheshire and Shropshire Trust’s. We serve a local population of 700,000 and diagnose over 2,500 new cases of cancer each year. We have state of the art facilities to treat all cancers. We have a purposed built Centre within an Acute Hospital Trust. We have a comprehensive portfolio treating all cancers. We believe strongly in a multidisciplinary and patient centred approach to cancer care. We have an excellent chemotherapy unit and Fresh Hair Salon on site. The Cancer Centre provides State of Art Radiotherapy facilities with a Toshiba 16 slice bariatric CT scanner, a conventional simulator, four beam matched multi-mode linear accelerators (Linacs) all with On Board KV and MV imaging and a Gulmay superficial unit. The department is currently delivering IMRT through fixed fields and arcs, IGRT up to level 2. Other advanced techniques delivered in the department are Deep Inspiration Breath Hold for breast cancer, 4-Dimentional CT planning and gated treatment delivery. Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy for lung cancer will be available for patients by summer 2016. The radiotherapy department is already drawing up plans to add a fifth Linac bunker and is planning the ten year refresh of all its major equipment.
We have our own 5 bedded award winning emergency portal, The Emergency Assessment Unit, and a well-established and supported Acute Oncology Service. This is situated alongside our inpatient ward which we co share with our haematology colleagues. We have a diverse Clinical Trial portfolio and a progressive team of site specific trials nurses. We are top national recruiters for many trials. We are particularly active in radiotherapy trials and targeted therapy. All consultants are encouraged to be principal investigators where possible and to become involved in the Trial management. Professor Sule Suso has strengthened research links between the oncology department and Keele University. He is developing both basic and translational research on cancer diagnosis. He supports PhD students, therefore there is job opportunities to do higher MD/PhD in Oncology.
Clinics are supported by Registrar’s, Clinical Fellows and ANP’s and opportunities exist for flexible working.
The University hospital of North Midlands is based in Stoke on-Trent, Staffordshire and is in close proximity to the beautiful countryside of the peak district. It has excellent road links being situated on the M6 motorway and is within easy travelling distance to the thriving cities of Manchester and Birmingham.
Staffordshire adjoins Cheshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, the West Midlands and Shropshire, and is part of the National Forest and Peak District National Park. Cannock Chase is within the County an area of outstanding Natural Beauty. There are 2 local universities and a number of high performing schools and colleges (including a number of independent and grammar schools such as the Yarlet School/NULS and Denstone College). The area boasts affordable housing within easy commute to either of the main hospitals.
This post has an enhanced package of £18,000 payable in £6,000 instalments upon completion of years 1, 2 and 3, together with an attractive relocation package of up to £8,000.
