CONSULTANT IN PAEDIATRIC INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY
This new post is to support the expansion of the paediatric interventional radiology (IR) service at Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH). It is anticipated that the post holder will bring IR skills to the department, and will develop a specialist interest in areas of paediatric IR that will help deliver improved, minimally invasive care for the children in the West Midlands.
The IR service is run by one full time BCH Interventional Radiologist and supported by an SLA with University Hospital’s Birmingham. We currently perform more than 600 IR procedures per year. More than 85% of these procedures are performed under general anaesthesia. The major categories of IR work are: biopsy and drainage; hepatobiliary intervention; diagnosis and treatment of vascular anomalies; angiography and arterial intervention; urological intervention; gastrointestinal intervention; and neurointervention. Central venous access is primarily provided by a dedicated Lines team.
BCH is a 320-bed (31 bed PICU) hospital which was recently rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission and provides a wide range of general and specialist health services to children and adolescents within the West Midlands and beyond. As Birmingham’s lead provider of health services for children, the Trust enjoys a national and international reputation in specialist areas including liver transplantation, small bowel transplantation, cardiac surgery and neonatal surgery. The trust was recently appointed as one of the four national centres for the Children’s Epilepsy Surgery Service. The Trust also manages city-wide Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.
