Full-time, Permanent Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist at the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust
We aim to provide first class patient care, and to that end a significant degree of subspecialisation has occurred within the imaging department. We have also tried to achieve an equitable division of workload between all the consultants.
The appointee will join a team of 5.5 wte existing Consultant MSK Radiologists providing diagnostic and intervention services to Trauma & Orthopaedics, Spine and Rheumatology Directorates.
University Hospital of North Midlands was awarded Major Trauma Centre status in March 2012. Each year, over 1,000 patients are admitted with serious injuries, including up to 300 that are classified as having suffered severe trauma. UHNM acts as a tertiary centre for the wider population of 2.25 million in the North West Midlands and North Wales.
UHNM is a tertiary referral centre for Trauma and Orthopaedics, supported by a team of 26 Orthopaedic surgeons, draining a population of approximately 1.5 million from Shropshire, Staffordshire, South Cheshire and Wolverhampton. The spinal team has 7 dedicated Spine surgeons providing all aspects of spinal services including deformity correction, oncology surgery and trauma. There is a huge demand for MSK intervention services from these directorates for procedures like Image guided injections, biopsies, nerve root blocks and vertebroplasty and the new appointee is expected to contribute to this type of work including arthrography/myelopgraphy.
The Haywood Hospital has specialist services for rheumatology and rehabilitation and services. The Rheumatology centre at the Haywood Hospital currently welcomes patients from North Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Cheshire. The catchment area has a population of over 500,000 patients. The Haywood hospital is a centre of excellence and has an active research team known nationally and internationally for its work. It has 14 Rheumatology consultants including Professor of Community Rheumatology.
At UHNM the MSK radiologists work closely with their colleagues in the Surgical and Rheumatology Directorate through Multi-Disciplinary team meetings. Currently Spine, Rheumatology, Orthopaedic and Tumour MDTMs are in place and there is a rota for lead radiologist for each of them.
The appointed radiologist would be expected to contribute to the 2017/18 service improvement programme by participating in:
•A Consultant of the day (COD) service for MSK
•Seven day working
•Skill mix, training more Radiographers as required and supporting existing advanced practitioners
Skill mix is well established within MSK and currently we have large number of advanced practitioners, including 3 Consultant Radiographers who report plain films including axial skeleton and paediatrics. We also have two trained sonographers performing MSK ultrasounds and a radiographer reporting Knee and spine MRI exams. There is a robust programme of clinical governance by regular audit of clinical practice.
