Full-time, Permanent Consultant Radiologist with an interest in Thoracic imaging at the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust
We aim to provide first class patient care, and to that end a significant degree of subspecialisation has occurred within the Imaging Department. The appointees will be members of a team of 13.0wte Consultant Body Radiologists (“BodRad”) within a department of 50 wte Consultant Radiologists. At UHNM there are currently three radiologists with an interest in thoracic and cardiothoracic imaging and one with a specialist interest in lymphoma, as well as five Advanced Practitioner Chest Reporting Radiographers and two Consultant Radiographers. Between them they provide a first class service supporting 10 respiratory physicians, 4 onco-haematologists, 6 cardiothoracic surgeons, 16 cardiologists and the clinical and medical oncologists, from UHNM and Leighton Hospitals.
UHNM has the largest lung cancer cohort in the West Midlands, has a large ILD service and hosts the Regional ILD MDT. There is a strong cardiac imaging service with over 2,500 cardiac MR scans performed per year (on Siemens 1.5T and 3T scanners) and a rapidly expanding Cardiac CT service (using Siemens 256 FLASH scanner) with approximately 1000 cardiac CT scans performed annually. UHNM is one of the top five largest cardiothoracic surgery centres in the UK (with over 1500 surgical procedures per year) and is in the top 3 busiest Regional Major Trauma Centres in the UK; both services requiring significant cardiothoracic radiology input.
At UHNM the cross sectional radiologists work closely with their colleagues through cancer MDTs and joint clinico-radiological conferences. The successful applicant will share responsibilities covering elements of Thoracic and Lymphoma Imaging on a rota sharing MDT cover on a Monday and attendance at the Respiratory Meeting on a Friday. Other MDTs and clinic-radiological meetings would be according to further sub-specialty interests.
The Imaging Services are based on a strong ethos of Quality assurance, Audit, Evidence and Research. Successful applicants would be expected to actively engage in Governance and Audit and specifically contribute to the Department’s on-going ISAS accreditation. UHNM is a research active organisation. There is a large number of active oncology trials, many of which require radiology support. The Imaging Department is also building up a portfolio of imaging-based research aligning to the Trust priority to become a major clinical research centre and developing a research interest will be actively encouraged.
The Body Radiologists provide a full on-call service, currently on a 1 in 15 weekdays and 1:10 Saturday or Sunday rota, with SpRs providing the first level of cover. Separate on-call cover is provided by neuroradiology and vascular radiology colleagues.
The appointed radiologists would be expected to engage with the Imaging Department 2016 service improvement programme developing:
- On call
- Cross-site working at the County Hospital
- A “Radiologist of the Day” service for USS and CT guided drains
In addition to core thoracic radiology service the applicants could choose to engage in a subspecialty interest such as:
- Cardiac CT and Cardiac MR
- PET Imaging
- Interstitial Lung Disease
- Lymphoma Imaging
The successful candidate would be expected to provide;
3 Sessions of CT supervision/in-patient and out-patient reporting/intervention
1 session of diagnostic USS – diagnostic/interventional
2 session of subspecialty cardio/thoracic service
1 Session of plain films
